You don't have to go back in time mate. Just look up herbalist companies in America. Legitimately making millions off of fake treatments for a miriade of things. The FTC and FDA have to constantly combat these types of shams. Covid-19 was one of the biggest booms for these sham businesses. Right now you can go and find them selling mineral water as a cure for everything. Check out the book Educated. It talks about how an abusive doomsday prepper family turned their paranoia into a thriving business selling fake cures to idiots.
largely i'm thankful for modern medicine but honestly old timey asthmatic treatments sound like they'd be much more fun
