@_elena@mastodon.social For my understanding #Matrix does not belong to the #Fediverse . Matrix is a federated protocol, but as far as I know you can not connect it to the Fediverse
@buzzdee@mstdn.social Thanks! I found this super helpful explanation on Reddit (of all places):
"Matrix is a federated protocol like ActivityPub. A server running ActivityPub can theoretically be bridged to Matrix and vice versa (though I'm not aware of a fully functional and reliable bridge as of right now). So it's part of the Fediverse in terms of philosophy and potentially in terms of interoperability, but most people don't bridge between them at this time"
@juancnuno@mastodon.social ok so from what I'm seeing, Matrix has incredible integrations (bridges) with Slack, Discord, Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, etc... so you may be able to communicate with your friends using these bridges https://matrix.org/ecosystem/bridges/ (disclaimer: it's my day 2 on Matrix and I'm not sure yet how to make a bridge work)
@_elena Some of the companies that host those messaging services aren't amenable to third parties accessing them and will close your accounts. That's enough of a reason (there are others) for me not to play with the bridges. At least with accounts I care about.
If you're braver than me you might wanna give Beeper a whirl. Their business model is to package a nice, customized Matrix client and lots of bridges in an easily digestible package. https://www.beeper.com
Just FYI regarding #Element, it's actually soon to have a major overhaul to improve usability and design even further. I'm not sure, but this may be as soon as the #MatrixConference coming up next week, but once again not sure about that. Anyway, you can get a sneak peak of where the development is currently at by looking at #ElementX. Just make sure if you're trying that, that you connect it to an account on a Matrixserver that supports sliding sync ( a requirement for ElementX).
@Blort@social.tchncs.de thank you! I've blocked time in my calendar to watch the keynote address from the conference (they're livestreaming on YouTube) this Friday morning. It's about Matrix 2.0: https://cfp.matrix.org/matrixconf2024/talk/WUGXFW/
@wtrmt@mastodon.social the whole point of Matrix is to be a free, open source, federated way of communicating, so you can use it on desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux), mobile and even from a browser: https://element.io/download
I'm doing this to get more friends on here. 99.9% of my real life close friends and family members only use social apps by Big Tech.
And I have a vested interest in having the Fediverse succeed because in a decade's time my little one will be a teenager. It would be upsetting to see her use toxic platforms by Big Tech. Her worth shouldn't be associated to the number of followers she has or likes she gets. I'd want her to use healthier social media...
@_elena@mastodon.social I find that exemplary. we should all take a lesson from you, actively building a better, trustful, more egalitarian world for the next generations.
@_elena@mastodon.social beautiful wrap-up! I also believe in the "freedom" of decentralization, and I love that new, interesting projects can be maintained by the community. The price to pay is the destiny of Kbin and other forks...
Bonfire is another interesting software, that I think it isn't having the attention it should haveโฆ Also, there is GoToSocial, which seems just perfect for small instances. I often ask myself if having a small, personal space (instance) would be better than join a larger one.
@_elena@mastodon.social There's the #WordPress community if you have a WordPress .org account but I don't know if they actually attend their rooms. I also know that this Mastodon . uno instance has their matrix room on invitation where they talk about Fediverse. Btw, I heard discordant opinions of someone saying that xmpp is better than matrix but I don't know why.
