Why Doom 3 is still an important and misunderstood game

Looking back at the unloved Doom 3 with decades of hindsight.

I enjoyed it as a horror game set in the Doom universe.
My memory of Doom 3 is being impressed at first but then that being ground away by repetition.

The first time I saw some of the texture details and tech (was that bump mapping? I can't remember) I was wowed. However then it all looked like that. All the time.

Then there was the jump scares. First was great, then diminishing returns till it gets to the point where a combo of the lighting and room layout let's you know exactly when they are going to happen.
- Yeah, bump mapping. It was pretty and scary, but I only played a little bit at a friend's, so didn't get tired of it.
Meh. It has an aggressive amount of the bad shiny bloom that was around back then, and the enemies just teleported in behind you constantly. It was definitely a miss.

Riddick, on the other hand. That was a great game.
