Kevin Mitnick Obituary - Las Vegas, NV
Loved his book Ghost in the Wires. Sad day in the computing world.
Same, I have it proudly sitting on my shelf above my homelab :(
I appreciate that his obit outlines how exasperating Kevin was. But ultimately he did a lot of good even if he did get a bit of a god complex from his notoriety. No matter how you slice it, 59 is too young, and Kevin was far from enough of a jerk to deserve that fate. I hope his family can mourn and find peace. See you on the flip side, Kevin.
My company had worked closely with KnowBe4 for ages and I remember reading so much about him as a kid. I remember the FREE KEVIN stickers. What a bummer. RIP.
I saw him give a presentation 14 years ago about security. His primary emphasis was how much of hacking is composed of social engineering. He showed off different techniques that were state of the art for 2010. RIP
Same here. He came to my company and did a good security presentation with an emphasis on how easy it is to fool people. He gave out business cards that were a miniature lock picking set.
What the hell?!! Just this morning I told a bit about Mitnick's story to my sister and my wife, separately, I'd never done that before with either. I haven't talked about Mitnick with anyone in years. Until just this morning, and now 12 hours later, this.
Rest In Piece, Kevin. You have been in my thoughts today, as a living memory. I am glad to have bid you farewell in such a manner.
Please don't talk about me to anyone you know. I'm also too young and don't want to die the very day you mention my story.
Thanks 😊
With his first child on the way too. What a tragic story.
I enjoyed his Ghost in the Wires book and also his segment in the Secret History of Hacking documentary from the History Channel. I bought two of his other books about social engineering from a garage sale. I better start reading them
He seemed like a nice guy, though I've read his version of his story, but I'm sad to see him go so early

Oh man... Just 59 :(
Rest in peace, Kevin
I remember hearing an interview with him many years ago, and he shared a story about the shenanigans he got up to as a kid... he was into phone phreaking (used to be you could control the entire phone system by playing specific tones into any phone) and reprogrammed the phone system to think his friend's home phone was a pay phone. His friend's mom would try to call someone and the phone would ask her to deposit 20c. She was furious, and sent her son over to demand he fix it immediately.
I always thought that was one of the best pranks ever. RIP to a legend.
Only 59. Interesting guy. Haven't followed him much since the 90s
Rest in peace. Our organization has used his product for quite a while.
I got to do an interview with him when I worked at Spiceworks and he was genuine and nice to talk to. Sad to see him taken so young.

RIP Condor
Fuck cancer.
Who downvotes “Fuck cancer!?”
RIP to a legend.
Sad news. RIP
Damn, I loved his book and had it in audiobook form. What an exciting life he had. I don't feel as bad knowing that he had been fulfilled and accomplished so much in his life time.
Hands down, one of the nicest obituaries I've ever read.
Rip way too young
:(
Love his book, especially his biography. He had a very interesting life before becoming a cybersecurity consultant.
There're also a few talks of his on youtube for anyone interested.
What a lovingly written, beautiful obituary. If you're reading this and didn't click through yet, some highlights to help nudge you:
I can't imagine the loss and devastation his pregnant widow feels, but I'm so glad that she and their child will be surrounded by so many people who dearly loved him.
Truly - what a loss to the entirety of humanity. What a gem of a human.
