Jared Dicus will not be eligible for parole until 2043 at the earliest under the terms of his plea deal.
A judge in Texas sentenced a man to 40 years in prison for murdering his wife just months into their marriage.
Jared Dicus, 23, confessed to killing his wife, Anggy Diaz, 21, on Jan. 11, 2023, the same day that her mutilated body was discovered near the couple's residence, according to the Waller County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).
The newlyweds were living in a home on the property of Dicus' parents, who alerted police after coming across their daughter-in-law's body, according to the WCSO.
Sheriff Troy Guidry described the scene at a press conference a few days later, saying: "A portion of the body was dismembered, and the residence was covered in blood. Gruesome scene at best."
“Waller County does not tolerate domestic violence. Heinous crimes like this one will not go unanswered, we will seek justice for the victims of domestic violence and send a message to the perpetrators that here, we fight for our victims,” [Waller County District Attorney] Whitmore said in a statement.
[Sheriff] Guidry said in his press conference that deputies had been called to the couple's residence for reports of domestic violence on more than one occasion before Diaz's death.
Seems to me like the county isn’t on the same page with how they deal with domestic violence. I’d say a beheading is far worse than a gun shot but if this were a gun crime, I feel like there’d be more outrage with lack of gun restrictions. Maybe if states took domestic violence more seriously we could avoid some instances of murder regardless of the weapon.

What is it with US police departments making statements that imply they barely understand their role in the community? No one gets anything out of this part of the statement except concern that the department thought it needed to be said.
"We may just be the police, but we don't like domestic violence, and that includes the decapitating kind. We've decided to do something about it because someone's gotta, god damn it. We fight for our victims... No, for victims... No, yeah, our victims—that doesn't sound right. Anyway, fear not people of Waller Country! And let that be a message!"
Edit: lol it seems everyone else made it to this part of the article and face palmed too. Sounds like a very inept police department.
Well see, I was thinking of doing some domestic violence, but wow it looks like they take it seriously. This warning just took one more domestic violencer off the streets.
...oh my goodness. How horrible. Just kill him & call it a day; this monster deserves it. And he should never be reintegrated into society. How in the world did a judge in Texas, of all places, not go for the death penalty?
