Felipe Andres Coronel (born February 19, 1978), better known by the stage name Immortal Technique, is an American rapper and activist. Most of his lyrics focus on controversial issues in global politics, from a radical left-wing perspective.
In a third-world fascist state, lock the nation With 90% of the wealth in 10% of the population
The Central Intelligence Agency takes weight faithfully
The finest type of China white and cocaine you'll see
Honey I'm home, nevermind why our bank account's suddenly grown
It's funny, we're so out of this debt from this money we owe
Woulda ya mind if I told you I had two governments overthrown
To keep our son enrolled in a private school, and to keep ya tummy swollen
C'mon, our fuckin' home was built on the foundation of bloody throats
The hungry stolen of they souls, of course this country's runnin' coke
I took a stunted oath to hush the one's who know
But CIA conducts the flow of these young hustlers who lust for dough
I don't get your comment. All of these things are true: Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins talks about how Halliburton with aid from CIA used to lock in contracts with developing countries that ultimately skewed their power balance into the hands of a very few, who ran brutal regimes often peddling in the drug business, which with much help form the agency exacerbated the crack epidemic in the 80s.
I don't think that's quite right, although I know it's a common interpretation. For contrast, Boots is sincere but not cringe (at least, he wasn't in his prime some of his new stuff is kind of cringe).
Nah it's right. Boots kicks ass and I like him even more than I like Immortal Technique, but his sincerity would be what gets called cringe by someone who didn't like him
I've got plenty to criticize about Immortal Technique, most frequently using SV as a figure of speech or using slurs, but those are specific criticisms instead of naming a reaction. Cringe is a good word for joking around or manipulating cringers with the shame they're susceptible to, but it doesn't describe anything about a piece of media
If all you want to do is sneer, you've got things figured out, but having reactionary elements doesn't mean he has nothing of value to say and, while his affect has some backwards elements of his culture, what he actually discusses is often radically progressive.
You’re right. I was being an ass. Tbh, the root of it is how much he gets right just makes it so his homophobia hurt more. I shouldn’t use that to take away from his insights though.
I appreciate the self-crit. The homophobia really does suck and I share some disappointment over it. Ironically (?), I have a similar thought on Stalin, who gets pinned with false shit all the time to try to undermine his radical progressivism but -- unlike those false accusations -- was genuinely personally homophobic to a surprising extent. He was more dismissive of gay socialists than he was even of Trots, as far as I can tell.
