The amount of times capitalism gets dragged into a thread that has nothing to do with economics or politics is, quite frankly, astounding.
edit: I get it, you are all replying the same thing. Point taken, capitalism has its hands in everything. My point: we don't have to circlejerk about it every 3 seconds. I would rather not delete this comment, but why isn't there a block notifications button on Lemmy?
Which part of my comment implied you did? Seems like a poor choice to be calling other people thick skulled when you've just failed basic reading comprehension.
There is a point at which conversation breaks down and everything you say is basically ignored because people on the internet make snap judgments about what you're saying and filter it into the category of "agree" or "disagree" and then up/down vote accordingly. I don't have time to go back and forth with people on the--fuck, I just responded
My sibling in Christ, you broke the conversation down,it didn't magically happen. Someone responded in good faith and you were an asshole instead of continuing the conversation or offering literally anything of substance
Eh, maybe you're right, but I was getting dogpiled and it gets old fast. Honestly, I think capitalism is a major problem and we can replace it with something better, but people on Lemmy are so fucking obnoxious about it that my patience wears thin. If you say anything remotely against that group think, you will get dogpiled. The other day, I had a post that said something about China/Tiananmen Square, and had so many comments complaining. I don't think I even encountered this much toxicity on reddit, this is ridiculous. Hence the "you tankies" comment.
Eh, maybe you're right, but I was getting dogpiled
We don't have downvotes on our instance. When we disagree or think a comment adds nothing, we tend to respond.
That's why you got so many answers, which you describe as "dogpiling". If you want to defend your position, responding to only one of those is perfectly fine.
Also for fuck's sake:
I don't think I even encountered this much toxicity on reddit, this is ridiculous
Nobody was toxic with you in this thread, nothing beyond being a bit harsh-toned. Reddit is far much worse. Again, probably you felt like that because of the sheer amount of answers you got.
The other day, I hate a post that said something about China/Tiananmen Square, and had so many comments complaining
Got a link ? because I suspect the comments in answer to you were not just "complaining" but were also argued and provided information.
The stuff you posted includes what is basically NATO propaganda, which is why it got so much reactions (and admittedly not all of them constructive - again, no downvotes here). Don't take my word for it, take the CIA's word for it for example (or any number of a hundred - far better argued and sourced than mine - answers in the very thread you linked). The "Tiananmen Square massacre" as usually described in Western sources is not something that actually occurred.
LOL, you think the enshittification of the Internet has nothing to do with economics or politics?! I'm almost morbidly curious about what exactly you think it does have to do with, then!
I'll forgive you for strawmanning my position because I haven't fully articulated it. Of course capitalism is connected to every area of our everyday lives.
But, unpopular opinion incoming, people go out of their way to bring up capitalism in every thread and it gets old fast. You could have a thread on !AskLemmy about how hard it is to be a dog-walker, and there will be comments saying how OP wouldn't need to be a dog walker if it weren't for capitalism! Whether you think that's true or not is beside the point; this corner of the internet is always beating the dead horse called "capitalism bad".
Hmm, we may be talking past each other. I'm not disagreeing with OP's point that capitalism is a problem or even a problem for the internet. I'm saying that it gets brought up so often that its tiring. That's where the strawman comes in: they were arguing against a position that I didn't hold.
I took issue with your claim that this was "a thread that has nothing to do with economics or politics." That's clearly untrue, regardless of how "tiring" it is for you.
Also, by the way, what's happening now is not that we're talking past each other, but rather that you're backpedaling to try to save face.
Nah, I think I would know if I had changed positions. Even if you read my original comment, I'm complaining about how often capitalism is brought up when it doesn't need to be. But I'm not going to try to convince you because clearly your mind is made up.
Basically everything around you is not there by happenstance but because of hundreds of years a very specific economic arrangement of society. You would be hard pressed to find anything touched by humans in the last 200 years that doesn’t have capitalist contradictions embedded into it
Eh, I agree with the general point and would like a better system but can we talk about other things ffs. The general atmosphere on here is so negative.
When someone complains about capitalism or neoliberalism with something that doesn’t involve it, I always like to ask them to tell me the definition of the word without googling it.
