People hate him and have always hated him the whole time. He just has an energized base that controls the party and in 2016 the other option was even more odious to people (and not even the majority of voters in the country lol, just key voters in key places).
I actually do believe someone like Nikki Haley would be stronger for Republicans in a general. She just cant win a primary because MAGA controls those.
