Never stopped :putin-wink:
I support Pkyiv in Evrope, I'm also into black metal and my political beliefs are super sus.
Lathing a new shitty culture war point, Kiev for people who oppose the war and Kyiv for Ukrainian nationalists and supporters.
I think this has already happened, much like "Ukraine" vs. "The Ukraine."
saying the country's name correctly isn't a "culture war" thing, it's not been in use since the 90s
I understand the baggage behind it, but "the Ukraine" is still commonly used (out of habit or ignorance or whatever) and I don't think its the fool-proof Russian nationalist shibboleth the Ukrainian nationalists make it out to be.
Isn't it just one of those linguistic oddities that doesn't really mean anything, like how Germans call Switzerland "der Schweiz"?
We still call a country in the west "THE Netherlands" which is a similar meaning frankly.
I have been to France.
I have been to Germany
I have been to THE United Kingdom
I have been to THE United States
i have never heard anyone under the age of like 60 say it in real life
Growing up, Ive mostly heard it as “the Ukraine” in Texas (not that it comes up often here) buy it may just a be a slow to change and we typically go out of our way to pronounce shit fucked up lol
Doesn’t Ukraine also mean “border lands” or something like that. Even in the name itself, it is possessive of something else.
Whoever lathed this is on thin ice.
If someone calls me on Odessa instead of Odesa I’m throwing a chair though.
The war isn't over yet. Wait a little before you put the "Mission Accomplished" banner up.
Have they changed spelling of Kievan Rus as well … ?
