  • well, yes, i dont think there's anything stopping you from doing that in any way. But the bot account flag is basically just honor system is my point. I wouldn't expect it to be a rock-solid way to deal with bots. Only the good/non-malicious actors are going to properly label themselves.

  • Only for accounts actually labeled as a bot. Thats basically just a flag that can be turned on and off, someone who is going to make a bot for malicious purposes such as spamming content probably won't flag it properly.

  • Second (or i guess, like, 4th?) jets. I almost always try to order a pizza from there when i'm in town.

  • That would help too, yes, but I don't think lemmy (currently) has options for converting or limiting file uploads that I can tell.

  • i've personally (as DM) let players have both a feat and an ASI at the appropriate levels. Honestly doesn't hurt balance that much overall, just makes for slightly more powerful PCs.

  • as of right now, we don't really have any server-wide rules, as we've been small enough that we haven't really needed them. The rules have been left up to individual communities. My gut feel would be "don't do anything illegal, and stay on topic" for rules at the moment. Is there something specific you're looking for answers on?

  • Each community is allowed to set their own standards for the rules they have, there's no server wide ban necessarily against NSFW, so you should check with the mods of a given community

  • How best do you recommend continuing the protest? Simply stop using reddit altogether, or is there a malicious compliance you recommend?

Unfortunately, that's probably the only route, IMO

My usage has gone down significantly since the API changes but I haven’t been able to kick it altogether.

While it's not exactly a perfect replacement for reddit yet, lemmy can help with that, i've found. If you click to the "all" feed you can basically get a slows/less populated version of reddit r/all. Really all it lacks at the moment is user participation, which has been climbing a lot over just the past few weeks.

  • Even more frustrating when you realize, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, these new “AI” programs and LLMs aren’t really novel in terms of theoretical approach: the real revolution is the amount of computing power and data to throw at them.

This is 100% true. LLMs, neural networks, markov chains, gradient descent, etc. etc. on down the line is nothing particularly new. They've collectively been studied academically for 30+ years. It's only recently that we've been able to throw huge amounts of data, computing capacity, and time to tweak said models to achieve results unthinkable 10-ish years ago.

There have been efficiencies, breakthroughs, tweaks, and changes over this time too, but that's just to be expected. But largely its just sheer raw size/scale that's just been achievable recently.

  • I'm not sure what you're trying to say here; LLMs are absolutely under the umbrella of AI, they are 100% a form of AI. They are not AGI/STRONG AI, but they are absolutely a form of AI. There's no "reframing" necessary.

No matter how you frame it, though, there's always going to be a battle between the entities that want to use a large amount of data for profit (corporations) and the people who produce said content.

  • oh, really? maybe i'll turn mine off then.....Thanks for the heads up!

  • Definitely opens up a big question about the security of Lemmy instances that I am sure will be discussed over the next few days.

They added 2FA login to lemmy in one of the newer updates. Probably pretty pertinent for any admins to use it....

  • For what it's worth, the admins won't actually see that, they disabled responses on those messages. That's why it says "private moderator note", it's a note only the mod team can see

    (It's still funny, though)

  • I'd love the second option, utilizing SSO so that I can effectively have the same account over different protocols/instances. I feel like that's far down the wish list overall of what we'll see coming though.

  • By default lemmy instances will federate when they're made aware of each other. I don't think your instance will federate with any of you set it up as a private instance, though.

Other than that, you can blacklist instances you don't want to federate with.

  • most will just slow the rate your deck discharges (if you're using it), you need a high output charger to actually charge it. Anker makes a few that will, i personally have the 737 and think its worth every single penny with the steam deck.

  • My favorite npc I ever ran was in a homebrew spelljammer campaign a few years ago, the foible for the party was a beholder pirate captain named eye-beard who would constantly one-up or outmaneuver the party. Also let me talk like a pirate. After they killed him he later came back as a death tyrant

  • It's definitely a scam. Anything message that doesnt have the username in red is not from reddit.
