Anon thinks about Google
  • And I didn't say this was limited to iPhones. I mentioned that this could be said of any company when they make devices in the millions. Would you prefer Samsung next? Sony?

When your entire "proof" of lack of quality is mostly speculative articles and random Reddit articles, then it shows you pretty much have no proof. Yes, there was one or two real things, but that isn't enough to paint an entire brand and series as bad. If this was all anything took to prove something lacks quality, then everything lacks quality, is a disaster, etc....

  • Anon thinks about Google
  • And most of them of them were a repeat of a few problems that were literally fixed with a OTA patch, even to the point it was mentioned in the article you posted. Half of your "facts" were someone even mentioning they got a lemon by their own admission, and when a company makes over a million of the same device, a few lemons happen (it's why there is a term for it).

And the few that don't match these were speculation articles. Again, this could be said of so many companies and/or devices.

    Should I post a links to iPhones and their problems? https://www.gizchina.com/2021/11/21/apple-recalls-the-iphone-12-iphone-12-pro-due-to-sound-issues/ https://www.macworld.com/article/675797/iphone-11-recalled-for-touchscreen-issues-how-to-get-a-replacement.html https://support.apple.com/iphone-6s-6s-plus-no-power-issues-program/other-countries https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/11/09/apple-activates-iphone-x-display-module-replacement-program-for-touch-issues https://9to5mac.com/2019/05/15/iphone-7-no-service-program/ https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/news/apple/139529-apple-iphone-6-plus-touch-disease-flaw-here-s-how-to-get-it-fixed/

I'm not even into a half dozen Reddit/speculation articles yet.

  • Anon thinks about Google
  • Issue is, almost ever issue you've labeled here is a random (mostly reddit) post. I could pretty much name any series of any devices and build the same type of list. It doesn't help make your comment look more valid. In fact, it kind of hurt it.

Four more states join US monopoly lawsuit against Apple
  • Apple makes it hard, if not impossible, to leave their ecosystem. And they are a large enough entity (in the USA where this is based) to use and abuse this size and influence.

With Android, if i don't like Samsung, i can use Google, Motorola, etc. Same with Windows. I can buy Microsoft Surface devices, or Dell, HP, etc. I could also buy a Linux computer, Chromebook, Macbook, Android tablet, iPad, etc...

With iOS, it's Apple or nothing. This makes Apple a gatekeeper, and a dangerously strong one. For more and more people, their "computer" is their smartphone, and with iOS, Apple is the first and final word. Want to sell to an Apple user digitally, Apple must get a cut, and they must approve of it. This just further empowers Apple, as they have more and more power and sway into what can and can't be done. Combined with the fact as I mentioned that Apple makes it so hard to leave them. It is this size and power that makes them a monopoly, not their popularity. It's the same thing that happened to Microsoft with it's monopoly lawsuits. It wasn't they were "just popular", its they used their size and power to limit/surpress competition to empower/enrich themselves.

As for your example of "better like Microsoft", I do have options, and those options will still allow me to leave them easily and non-painfully, or at least if I still use Windows I can use apps regardless of what Microsoft thinks or giving them more money "just because". Apple iOS doesn't allow this. As for power companies, ISP, streaming options, these aren't the same subjects so I'm not going to address them. And before it comes up, no, consoles aren't apart of this because they are marketed and sold as limited functionality devices. iPhones and iPads are sold as fully functioning devices (see "There is an App for That" and "Whats a PC?" marketing from Apple).

The USA has gone through this before with things like Bell Telephone and Standard Oil. They were too big and powerful that the only way to fix it was to break them up. The hope is that instead of breaking up Apple like those past examples is to prevent them from abusing their power and size before they get that large and dangerous.

Also, remember that Google is in the final processes of monopoly abuse lawsuits, Amazon is being sued for monopoly practices, Disney was sued for antitrust a few years ago, and Ticketmaster is being sued for monopoly charges. So, its not just only Apple here. And these are just the lawsuits from the US government, not even including EU nations, other companies, etc...

People who have installed Linux on their parents computer, how did it go? Which distro do you recommend? Any tips?
  • Could be good if they are willing to try, and you choose a distro that closely resembles Windows. And they aren't purchasing new hardware and their current Windows OS isn't being supported anymore.

Big fan of if it works, why change it?

Also, don't promise them that it'll be perfect and magical, set their expectations to be realistic. (This is where typically people convinced to buy a Mac quickly learn to hate it. They are promised it will never have problems and then they have one problem after another, leading to hating it and tired of having to message for more help. And a lot of people I've found that sing blind praises for anything are the same ones quick to blame and down talk users when things goes wrong)

  • People who have installed Linux on their parents computer, how did it go? Which distro do you recommend? Any tips?
  • First challenge would be trying to convince them to spend a ton of money for a computer that they only use to do basic web surfing.

Then there is the fact that MacOS is different than Windows in look and feel, so a larger learning curve, all to do what they've always done before. People don't like change, and the bigger the change, the more the pushback.

And in my parents case, they have already talked to other parents who's kids convinced them to get a Mac. And heard all the complaints and regrets of those other parents for buying a Mac, and how it will be their first and last Mac. (My mother needed help buying a new laptop a few months ago, so I know about this).
