  • Would kiosk mode be any good for her use case? Add the photos etc. as a different user and give Grandma read only access, and automatically reset her home directory on boot / login.

Use an immutable distro to lessen the chance of her deleting something important, and you should be set. Maybe set up Firefox with sync so that she can add bookmarks, and have that log in automatically.

  • This is what I do too. If I edit a post, I'll comment on any replies to let them know that the post has been changed too though, especially if a conversation has started.

  • Be kind to yourself. You're in a new city in a new country, where everything's similar to what you know, but different enough to be confusing, and you're doing it to make sure that your family is safe. I would imagine that you're tired from the move, the travel, and the job search, but you're still making an effort to put your daughter first.

I don't post a lot here, but I lurk most days, and from what I've read, you seem like a good guy. Take a breath and take care of yourself too, you'll get there :)

  • Do you know which area you're going to end up living in yet? The reason I ask is because there are services aimed towards kids with autism and ADHD, where they can meet other kids in the same situation, and potentially make friends. They're obviously focused on their own areas though, and as far as I know, don't put the kids in touch with kids from other areas.

There can be a stigma around groups like these, as people assume that it's only people with more severe issues who need them, but my nine year old has been going to one for several years, and for most of the kids it's just somewhere where they don't have to mask. It's really helped my kid to have an outlet away from school, and to meet other 'different' kids. I haven't looked at the groups for older kids yet, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a provision.

Something else that might be useful for you both, are the various coffee mornings that have sprung up since Covid. They tend to be aimed towards helping with mental health, but a lot of them are more like an excuse to get out of the house and meet people. I visit one once a week which is run by Signpost Cymru, a mental health charity, so it means that they've got access to mental health resources if anyone needs them. It's very handy, and like I said, gets me out of the house for a few hours and talking to people I wouldn't have otherwise met.

  • Do you have individual switches for each plug socket / outlet wired next to the door? That seems like it would take a lot of wiring, and need a lot of switches.

The room I'm currently in has six double sockets spread out around the room. They each have one switch per socket like in the post's image. If they were wired back to the door, they would need a lot more wiring, and one of the two entrance doors would have to be chosen. You'd then have to walk to that door every time you wanted to turn something off.

It seems like a lot more work for no real benefit.

  • I've only just set it up, mainly for the facial recognition. I had no idea that it could do that type of search too. It's going to be really helpful with my faulty brain and not remembering words πŸ™‚

  • Christ, you could have put a warning! I'm going to need to sit down with a cup of tea 😱

  • @TherapyGary@lemmy.blahaj.zone @Serinus@lemmy.world @ultrahamster64@lemmy.world Thanks all, these are helpful :)

My PC looks like ultrahamster's too, so still quite big. In the comments, the emojis are a bit smaller, but still bigger than the regular ones. I'm not getting anyhting like the issues from TherapyGary's Raccoon screenshot though, so that might be a separate issue.

I've just quickly checked using the Tesseract site, and the emojis there are pretty much the same size as standard, and nothing like any of our screenshots.

I'll let the admin know on dbzer0 and point them to this thread. Hopefully we can figure out the problem :)

  • I just tried installing Signal now and it's asking for a phone number with no way to skip

  • That would be awesome, thank you πŸ™‚

  • Ah, I'll pass the emoji issue on, thanks. I've only really seen the problem with Hexbear's own emojis, but just assumed that it was something to do with the nonsense they're always accused of.

I can't remember what I put in on my application now, but I think I put Blackbeard, then said something like just kidding, and put a digital pirate. It's been a while though, and my memory's not that good πŸ™‚

  • Just checking, but are the emojis supposed to be that big? They're taking up more than half my screen width. I'm using Voyager on Android. Normal emojis are the usual size, slightly bigger than the standard text size.

(plus, of course, I want to know what my flairs are 😁 )

  • I'm sure I remember using it in the first game, but it was a long time ago πŸ‘΄πŸ»

  • I don't ever remember using the last one, but I'm sure I knew a code for no clip.

  • It's the last one for me

    'Just write it down'

    'IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK!!!'

  • My great grandmother's wedding certificate lists her as a spinster, at the ripe old age of 19. This was a little over 100 years ago, in 1914
