Which distro do you use?

I've been to Paris 3 times, I'm from BC in Canada. April, May and October I went. Had an amazing time every time, people, food, places. It's one of my favorite cities.
I live in southern BC and heat with a newer Carrier heat pump. The outdoor unit is a 28 seer model paired with an indoor ducted unit. It works fairly well until a week or two when we have -25c and below which I switch to our baseboard. I'm a home builder and built the house and it's definitely better than a 1990 or older home but nowhere near the efficiency we are building today.
Our electric rates are $0.142/kWh. I don't know what gas is as I don't have the option.
I do agree that heat pumps struggle with colder temps and northern homes, especially older ones, aren't going to be able to heat consistently through the winter. Storms and outages also are an issue but gas won't heat a house if there's no power either.
Gas is cheap and it is fairly efficient (debatable) but the rest of your comment is silly. My wife and I and a child of 5 live in a 1000sqft house (two floors total 2k sqft) and heat and cool with a heat pump. Electric on demand water. Nothing crazy about the building as far as insulation and air sealing. 2012 build-to-code. Our electricity bills are NEVER over $200 a month and usually under $150 a month. We haven't had a power outage in two years and the last one was scheduled for about 1 hour.
If you want to argue for gas make better points. Electricity is cheap and reliable. I don't disagree that gas is cheap also and that we shouldn't entirely abandon gas and I'm a realist in thinking we can't eliminate it entirely and suddenly.
Ceramic/glass top electric is shit. I've used gas and induction a fair amount, but at home I have a mid range priced electric ceramic and it's terrible compared to the other two options.
I think it's to save them from sexual orientation education in schools? Some people think teaching our kids about gender fluidity and acceptance will somehow make them gay.
!kootenays@lemmy.ca (BC) is not growing much but could be added?

My wife and I both use pixel 6s and we struggle with RCS going on and off/having to switch to SMS at least once a week. Can't figure out why but it's frustrating.
I've had this turned off for quite some time (maybe 2 years) and haven't had it turn itself back on. Using Firefox.
I think the same thing about everything! Never believe anything that doesn't align with my personal beliefs no matter how much evidence exists to the contrary!
You're being downvoted but the amount of people I see in my work and personal life that barely make ends meet but are buying garbage on Amazon constantly is staggering. Prime days especially I was shaking my head at people bragging about the deals they got.
It would be a nice feature to be able to select which installed browser jerboa defaults to opening external links in.
Keep one in your car as well. I've carried one over 15 years under my seat and had to use it last summer when a motorcycle attempted to overtake and hit a turning car. It wasn't fun but I'm glad I had it.
This is the kind of content I am here for
I do use docker, I set up a docker account as well with selected permissions.
I do have a separate backup in a separate building that syncs the most important stuff.
It is backed up to a another drive that's in a separate building. At least the most important stuff syncs.
I have sonarr, radarr, gluetun and qbittorrent with overseer allowing my family to request movies and automatically download. I only have public indexers in prowlarr (1337x, kickass torrents, etc.)
This NAS also has a lot of important data like photos and documents.
I am used to vetting my torrents pretty thoroughly before downloading but now it's all automatic.
What level of risk am I running with my data when downloading things in this manner? Is there a chance of malware getting onto my NAS? Ransomware? Is the risk pretty minimal?
You are also people :)
Thanks for the reply. I have used VLC forever and here and there for casting. Mostly it's my parents using Plex that I'm trying to simplify for them. Not sure if jellyfin would help them lol
“Dry conditions are not new to the Special Areas, but ongoing moisture deficiencies and hot temperatures have devastated crops and pasture throughout the region. Producers are struggling to find enough grass, water, and feed for their cattle. Farmers are facing widespread crop failures. Significant grasshopper infestations are making a very difficult situation worse in many parts of the Special Areas. Declaring an agricultural disaster is one way we can raise awareness of how serious this problem is with the province and with the federal government.” Jordon Christianson, Chair
I currently use an old (2013?) Intel NUC with a 12TB MyBook plugged in as a simple Plex server. I want to get a NAS. Right now at Amazon or B&H I can get a DS923+ w/ two 16TB HDDS for about $1000.
My main question is if I should try to go the DIY route. Am I going to possibly regret putting all my eggs in the Synology basket? I like the DS923+ because of it's small form factor mainly. But I am sort of keen to use an open source OS like TrueNas.
My main uses are going to be Plex hosting, photo management for myself and wife and data backup. I am a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to electronics. I love messing around with things, trying new software, breaking stuff and fixing it. Are there any major restrictions I am going to experience with Synology? Thanks a bunch!
-edit- Thank you everyone for all the replies! Super helpful, Lemmy rocks :)
I currently use an Ubuntu distro (Mint) with Plex installed serving media to my local network. I installed docker last night so I can test out some photo hosting services.
Is there a benefit to running Plex through docker vs the traditional method?
