VHS advertisements were a crucial piece of insight into the greater world of anime—and they evolved into an art form of their own.

I loved those old AMV-style promo reels.

  • It's Friday - What are your plans for the week-end?
  • Last weekend I was in the final stages of selling my house and there was too much stuff to do to really relax. This weekend I'm not doing a dang thing, I'm gonna sit back and watch SGDQ or maybe the Olympics or something and play video games.

  • TIL Haydn's "Surprise Symphony" was NOT written to wake up sleeping audience members; that was just a myth

  • Bandle - Song guessing game, one instrument track at a time
bandle.app Guess the song, one instrument at a time

Daily musical game where you guess the song played by the band with the least musicians playing as possible

Guess the song, one instrument at a time

Probably the daily game I keep up with the most. I'm often garbage at guessing any song past 2010, but that's a me problem, not a Bandle problem.

What were the names your parents were going to name you that didn't make the cut?
  • Andy, but they decided against it at the last minute. However, my dad's brother and his pregnant wife really liked the name, and a few months later my cousin Andy was born.

  • How do you know what a streaming service have available if all of them need you to subscribe before showing you.
  • JustWatch does a decent job of telling you if a specific movie is on any of the streaming services. For example, I just searched for the movie Tombstone and apparently it's on Apple TV+, Hulu, and AMC's service.

It's not always accurate, so take everything it says with a grain of salt, but it's better than nothing.

  • Found a partially-completed cat from two years ago. Finished it up over the weekend.

I started this some time in 2022. I did the head and part of the left arm, and then got distracted and left it in a box.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I found the box and decided I need to finish the cat!

  • Does anyone else hear partake in the 1001 albums challenge?
  • Thank you for reminding me of this. I started a few years ago, got about a dozen albums in, and then fell off because I got busy with stuff. I was just thinking about how I need to find more music, time to pick this back up.

  • Water barrel for a fallout shelter from the Cold War era seen in a flea market.
  • I found a barrel just like that at an estate sale a few weeks ago! Part of me wanted it just because it looked cool.

  • Documentary focuses on man behind a cruelly bizarre 1990s Japanese reality show
  • I remember hearing about this show ages ago on an episode of This American Life. Thanks for the heads up, this sounds like a good doc.

arstechnica.com 5.25-inch floppy disks expected to help run San Francisco trains until 2030

"We have a technical debt that stretches back many decades."

5.25-inch floppy disks expected to help run San Francisco trains until 2030

I'm kind of shocked that they built the system in '98 and decided to use 5.25 floppies instead of the 3.5 ones.
