  • This, followed by the Remix with Ghostface Killah was the craziest "out of nowhere" shit I've seen in a while. Chaos from a couple years later is dope too. Idk what this guy is doing now, haven't heard from him since 2019.

  • I have a soft spot for old gangsta rap, so I very much enjoyed this album. It isn't great by modern standards but listening to this compared to a lot of stuff that was coming out in 1990 is night and day. It is honestly kind of weird hearing Ice Cube rap about some of this stuff compared to his modern, pretty family friendly persona.

That said, some things straight up aged kinda poorly. The "looking for the hanger" line on You Can't Fade Me/JD's Gaffilin' made me physically cringe and the "Oreo cookie" line doesn't hold up well either. That sad, it has been 33 years, so I can forgive some lines as being of their era. That said, some of the production is...messy? I don't know a lot about music production but on What They Hittin' Foe, when the guitar is coming in over his voice, and then is briefly just in the left headphone? That sounds like shit and I doubt it sounded good in 1990 either.

Overall, I love this album and have since I first heard it ~18 years ago. Ice Cube's voice is one of the best in Rap and his flow is timeless. A lot of stuff from the early 90's has really dated sounding flows but Ice Cube somehow makes his pretty simple flow come out in a way that sounds good 3 decades later.

Something else I found funny, did anybody else thing that part of You Can't Fade Me/JD's Gaffilin' sound exactly like the flow from Real Muthaphuckkin G's? Specifically when he says "Cause I know you're tryin' to break me, but if I find out your tryin' to fake me", I was instantly reminded of Eazy E saying "when ya talk about sprayin me, the same records that ya makin' is payin me". I know this sort of thing was pretty common back in then, but didn't they have problems? Just thought it was funny.

  • I checked out Yeat after he was interviewed on the Channel 5 Chicago Rap Festival video. I spent the last day listening to some of his stuff again after seeing this thread. This is probably the first time I've ever felt "too old". I've enjoyed a couple of his songs but overall I just don't get it. Despite that, I actually think his music is good, but I feel like I'm way outside the target audience.

That said, I fuck with Nun id change and No morë talk off of his 2023 album. I don't fully get it I think but I can still really get in to both of those tracks.

  • Excited for this, I've been vibing Only ever since somebody posted it on here like a month ago. Giving this a listen and will edit this later.

EDIT: I feel like there is too much going on to really have a strong opinion on yet. I liked it but it is pretty far from what I normally listen to and I'm kinda having a hard time putting words to it. Favorite tracks right now were probably What If You Hypnotise Me? and Can't Go Back

  • Unlike last week, this week I went in knowing that this is one of my favorite albums. Killer Mike is better known as half of Run The Jewels I think but this album is my favorite thing he has done. It almost feels like a preview of RTJ, with Mike on the mic and EL-P on production.

I don't want to just sit here and gush about the album but this is damn neat a perfect album for me. Everything I love in rap is here. The politics, the fast paced beats, the hard delivery, it is perfect. Not every song is perfect, Southern Fried could be better. But with highlights like Big Beast, Butane and Reagan it just doesn't matter. Especially Reagan.

Worth mentioning, the music video for Big Beast (NSFW: Topless women/fake gore) is one of my favorite music videos, even if it isn't a great way to listen to the actual song. The entire vibe just makes everything on the track hit harder.

Book Club Week 5: R.A.P. Music by Killer Mike

  • What do you think is coming up behind it? I've been sort of feeling the same thing but I'm so out of touch with any popular music outside of rap that I don't have any clue what to expect. My kids who listen to music heavily (18 and 15) either listen to rap or like...vaguely sad indie rock, so I'm very out of the loop.

  • I don't spend a ton of time online, besides listening to music and posting here, but it has to be mostly old school guys I'd think. Like Nas and Lil Wayne. Though Wayne used to have his own little band of haters back in the day.

Of modern artists...maybe 21 Savage? I feel like I know people who don't fuck with his music, but they acknowledge it is just personal preference.

That is just the internet though right? It is so easy for a few people to band together and get their voice amplified on here, even just a few loud haters can start a whole thing.

  • I've been listening to this guy, and the band he was in previously called Seeed. He does (and they did) sort of a electronic, reggae, rap mix. This is my favorite song of his but

Dancehall Caballeros when he was with Seeed is an sick dancehall/reggae track. I have been learning a bit of German, but it would for sure be enjoyable if you didn't understand a single word.

  • This is the most recent album we've done so far, hoping people enjoyed it! I'd never listened to this album before last week, Cardi B isn't my normal type of Hip Hop. Overall, this is the first album we've done for these threads that I thought was just kind of mediocre for me.

Started off strong, Get Up 10's beat has me moving and starts off pretty interesting. Goes a bit off the rails topic wise as the song goes on but I still liked it. This is sort of the direction of the whole album. The entire album has the hardest beats, makes me want to put some subs in the trunk and drive around. Also there is Be Careful, which has a whole different, lighter vibe to the beat that was a breath of fresh air when it came on the first time. There is something to be said for Cardi's cadence and voice too. She could probably rap some goofy shit and still sound good doing it. I don't know if this is a skill you can train or if you have to be born with it but she has it.

Besides Get Up 10, I think my favorite tracks were probably Be Careful, Thru Your Phone and Bickenhead. Thru Your Phone was for sure the most interesting song to me. The topic, the hook and the emotion expressed really worked for me.

Least favorite tracks were Best Life and Money Bag. I really did enjoy Chance's verse on Best Life, but I have a soft spot for Chance. Money Bag is just boring. It probably could have been saved if the beat went as hard as some of the earlier tracks on this album but here we are. Honestly, the entire album was just less interesting after Be Careful.

My whole thing with this album is that a lot of it is so uninteresting topic wise. Sometimes she brings up something interesting, like talking about being embarrassed by her teeth on Best Life and the whole start to Get Up 10's, but otherwise she isn't saying anything a million other rappers hadn't said before. I guess that is the nature of making an album aiming for commercial success, you are probably going to stick to what has been proven to work.

Question for the end to build off of something I mentioned further up, did anybody else feel this album was really front loaded? I know artists frequently start off an album with the stronger tracks but I can't figure out if I was just getting bored with the album or if this was a really bad case of it. I personally think Cardi is just an artist who works best on an individual song and can't string together a whole album.
