  • I think that might be an ‘a’ but def looks like it could be cove with how low resolution the image is. I suppose that is appropriate, all of my school materials seemed to be photocopies of photocopies.

  • Sure, by the unrealistic standards late-stage capitalism Apple is falling behind. But in the scheme of things, they are still one of the most profitable/successful companies. They still have enough money to keep innovation, development, and their retail spaces open.

There are successful companies that make a single product, and have been doing so for 50 years. I wish the view on companies would shift back to that being more the norm.

  • It would be against Islam for a woman to show herself (without a head covering) to a man she wasn’t married/related to. This isn’t true for woman and other woman. This person is trans and their friend treated them, through religious tradition, that she accepts her friend as a woman.

  • It’s not like I’m pro landlord. But, being realistic about a capitalist society, pitting those with opposing interests to fight one another is so much better than both of those things existing uncheck and us being the victim.

  • I would fully support some kind of UBI or someway to ensure that those who can’t work can live semi-independent lives. But in order for there to be money to support that system, a majority of people do have to work.

The alternative is some kind of utopian society that has yet to exist. If we make it to Star Trek and not Blade Runner I will fully embrace the idea that everyone can have all of their needs covered without the requirement for others to indirectly support that through labor and taxes. But until then, improving workers ability to support themselves also improves the ability to support those who cannot.

  • I like the idea of rent prices being tied directly to pay, maybe a straight %. It would be complicated, but pitting greedy landlords up against greedy businesses sound much more fair than getting fucked from both sides.

Landlords want to make the most money, but if what they can charge was directly tied to minimum wage, they will actually fight to raise pay. Not for altruism or any positive reason, but because they want to increase their own revenue.

It’s not a great idea, but it’s something I’ve thought about for a decade or so. Especially when that “Fight for $15” took so long to that even if $15 was the minimum wage, it would still be way behind to cost of living.

  • There is a mentality from Boomers and passed along to Gen X that full-time work does not entitle you to anything. That there are just millions of jobs in America that shouldn’t be required to pay people enough to live in the community they work, or anywhere for that matter. As long as that mentality aligns with the goals of capitalism, nothing will change.

You will hear all the excuses in the world justifying low-paying jobs. “Just get a better job if you don’t like the pay” “Those jobs are only for high school kids” “If they raise the pay they will raise the prices” The list goes on. None of them make a ton of sense if you explore the idea any further.

The idea of working hard and being, eventually, rewarded with good pay has been dead for decades. It is widely accepted that the easiest way to increase your pay is moving to a different company, which speaks a lot about longevity in this late-stage capitalism era most of us are living in today.

  • Sadly this has been used for longer than you might expect. Using the term AI to describe the practice is fairly new, but computers have been selecting resumes for humans to look at for many years. They may have called it “screening” or using an “algorithm” -made more complex with the wide adoption of LLMs and other types of AI tools.

You can find stories of colleges and companies getting in trouble for unintentionally racist algorithms from, at least, a decade ago. That would indicate that they have been in use for longer than that, potentially since the early 00s.

  • It would be an interesting issue to resolve if the EU were to pursue it. I guess one could argue that PS5s are sold in the EU, even with the PSN restriction in certain regions. I’d guess a resolution to this would have Sony remove all of their content on Steam, which I consider a negative for gaming in-general.

I’m guessing there is, or will be, a carve out for this type of thing. Precedent could be argued with my PS5 example above.

  • I did a lot of job applying recently. Many employers were never considered after I was made aware of how their application process worked. It got to the point where if they made me fill out a form of info that was already on my resume, I wouldn’t apply.

If it takes 10 steps to even get some AI bullshit to read my resume, imagine the nightmare working for the company.

I was hired at company that had an easy application process, interviewed me in-person the next day, and I was offered the job 3 days later (2 were the weekend). Even though the job offered less pay than I value myself at, I knew it was a company worth working for.

  • You are a sad nihilist and you have a strange way of arguing your point. Comparing a random person quoting a stat from the internet on a social media post to the CCP covering up Tiananmen is so interesting. It takes what-about-ism to a whole other level. It wasn’t even misinformation, it was just a hastily googled fact from some random person on Lemmy.

Hard to believe you wouldn’t go with the usual, “What about cars? What about being fat?” As if any of that would be relevant to the shocking stats for gun violence deaths of children and young adults.

  • Yikes. It doesn’t take too long before an attempted civil 2A debate lord shows their real view on life.

“I don’t accept your stats because those deaths only apply to children! Don’t skew the numbers!”

Eesh, I’m not quite sure how Biden got mixed into the discussion about gun control/gun violence. He has no plans to restrict access to guns at all. He’s even providing them to Israel so they can kill Muslim children.

  • Hell yeah! That’s why I keep a vial of anthrax on me at all times. Never know when you might need it.

You forgot to mention, pull into my driveway on accident, DEATH SENTENCE, served immediately. I need all citizens of the US to be Judge, Jury, and Executioner to feel safe.

  • When policing started including less-than-lethal alternatives for eliminating/subduing a threat, cops stopped killing as many people.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And while you may not operate that way, gen pop does, even trained “professionals”

  • While it sounds like you safely own a firearm, letting you do that means we let mentally ill people, irresponsible parents, and whoever feels like also have access.

Sorry to say, but I would take your guns away from you 1000x if it meant taking them away from people who cannot own them safely.

  • Everyone cool with gun rights until you ask if someone they know should have access to guns with little regulation. On the abstract, preserving rights sound good. But when you stop to think of the types of people you know/have met/know about, restricting gun rights feels a bit more logical.
