It’s the perception of increased crime that is driving many of these changes as Republicans continue to pillory Democrats as weak on law enforcement in the run-up to the presidential election.
Dang, I wonder what happened during the pandemic? It couldn't be that it accelerated the deterioration of the material conditions of the working class, could it?
Key phrase "It's the perception of increased crime that is driving many of these changes". Dang and who's responsible for that perception? Mass media?
Also like that this is yet another article throwing out arbitrary statements like "a huge spike in crime" or a "45% increase in serious incidents". What are the actual numbers?

Every mayor of a blue city is beholden to real estate developers and the chamber of commerce. They'll listen to and compromise with business owners to maintain "bipartisanship" and won't even pay lip service to anyone on their left. They are the first to defend their police when accused of abuse. Only the most spineless, easily-bought, afraid-of-conflict losers end up as mayors of blue cities
