What financial model would you like sync to operate under?
Idk, maybe the subscription they also sell?
But that would exclude people who don't want to or can't afford the subscription.
This way LJDawson is letting people choose.
Or you can just use one of the other various apps

I think the dev pays for Imgur and other media hosting site APIs so that is also a factor. No other app displays media as integrated as Sync.
I just tried uploading a picture and it was uploaded to my home instance for sharing. I do not see where imgur comes in the equation.
