Can somebody explain the difference and if I can follow Lemmy-communities from a PieFed instance?

I really like it. But I keep opting for Lemmy because of Voyager. It's just too convenient. Piefed's mobile UI is okay though. I could get used to it.
But, I don't want to settle on piefed.social. I usually avoid the big main instances. Thinking about selfhosting it, but haven't decided on a hoster yet.
- I dont mind using the flagship instance as the project is small and the admin is pretty cool!
  
  Also, if a large Lemmy instance would switch to Piefed (e.g. LW), they would become the biggest instance
  
  Is this project hinging on one person, like kbin (or mbin? I get them mixed up. ) did? I liked that project, but am glad I didn't make the switch, because it was gone maybe a year later.

  I already looked into other instances, but so far none satisfy my criteria: EU hosted, open to registration, admins that I know/trust. That's why I'm thinking about self hosting.

Does it support viewing and commenting on other fediverse systems like peertube, pixelfed, and mastodon?
My biggest change is creating a new post. I'm so used to that button being on the front page.
