Sometimes, ants get stuck walking in circles. How can one decide to take a left turn?

Fun fact: all of the ants pictured here are turning right.

Ah, the death circle.

Antelopes and other herd animals have been seen doing death circles as well, but only ants will circle until the very end.

Why would they turn the other way? The pheromone trail is this way and it keeps getting stronger, so we must be getting closer to the destination!
