The premier of Newfoundland and Labrador says he found it 'incredibly concerning' to hear senior staff from U.S. President Donald Trump’s office convey that the commander-in-chief is 'very serious' when he talks about annexing Canada.
I'd really like to think that the governments of states like California, Oregon, Washington, and New York would work with Canada to resist this stupid stunt and offer to instead become canadian provinces. I mean, if we're doing stupid shit about control of borders or whatever, and these states are already being attacked by Trump and giving more to the Fed than they're taking back, why not just offer our GDP to Canada in exchange for a functioning Federal government, with healthcare for our citizens too?
Time for Canada to start building bunkers along the border. Deep defense. Then weapons caches around the country.

It's an unfortunate guilt by association, but many, many, many of us Americans exhibit all of those qualities: arrogance, lack of respect for others, blatant ignoring of rules and agreements. Just generally being an asshole bully.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but I'm not quite convinced this was a legitimate victory. He mumbled something about "Elon knowing voting machine numbers" or some such on inauguration day. He's letting Elon's kid tell him to STFU on camera and is just sitting there taking it? Nah, something doesn't add up to me.

Trump isn't some dude who took power in a coup, he was elected by a pretty decisive margin. The house and senate are also GOP and were elected by a majority. And, this isn't just about Trump. I clearly remember how the US verbally attacked Canada under George Bush Jr. too, because even though Canada was willing to send soldiers to fight and die alongside US soldiers in Afghanistan, it wasn't willing to go on an adventure in Iraq too.
This is who the US is now. Some dude posting on social media that "hey, it's not all of us" or "this isn't who we are" or whatever is empty. If you're out in the streets, day after day, then sure, I'll respect that effort. But, really, the US is now the Nazi Bar, and I don't like Nazis.
Oh we're pretty united. When some dipshit from North Dakota says he can't wait to show us why they have the 2nd amendment and "clear out the liberal wackos" at a professional engineering conference, it really ties the population together.
Trump's closest ally (or "dom" if you will) is Vladimir Putin.
And he would stand to gain from any damage to US and to US-Canada relations. If US actually starts fighting and fucking up everything, it takes the heat off Russia and all US aid getting canceled will not be good for Europe and especially Ukraine. But also so many other places around the world from USaid.

Someone looking to sever ties with that ally. Everything Trump does makes the US weaker - his goal isn't to acquire Canada, it's to damage the US.

Trump was supposed to win, or at least pence was supposed to make it happen. The timing of the convoy was not accidental. There was an intent by some of the core organizers to overthrow our gov. The unity and synchronicity of the messages from figures in the us, and Russia, were also not accidental.
If anyone was paying any attention during the convoy, none of this annexing business should come as a surprise.
Sadly, I'm pretty certain some of our politicians and defense and intelligence type folk knew then, know now, and intend to do nothing to stop it, and likely assist it.

When I was in the Marines, and before I was in, and after I got out, we regularly trained in Norway, (oddly enough in an effort to dispel any notion of Russia coming west, funny) in the coldest parts of Norway. It wasn't fun, but it's silly to think the most well equipped and active military in the world somehow doesn't train to fight in the cold.
I'm out now, but when I was in, I'd say the majority, a vast majority, would not be interested in fighting Canada. I can't see America and Canada entering a war. I can see Canada capitulating to America's demands. I see it creating a lot of bad will between Canadians and Americans, and I see the ultimate conclusion being one we could've worked toward together, instead of what is ostensibly bullying.

Not secede but they could refuse to participate and could actively resist. The west coast and Minnesota might also. Lots of military probably have family in Canada also. Canada could sneak raiding parties into the US to knock out transmission lines, utilities, etc.

Actually, if this rhetoric gets much worse, I'll be in favor of a succession "dead man's clause". We could put forward a referendum question on the next state ballot to explicitly ask the public, a question something like "In the event that the federal government were to declare war on Canada, or demand territory from Canada, or assume control of Canadian territory or engage in military action against Canadian forces or civilians, are you in favor of recognizing federal authority to make such actions, or conversely, are you in favor of denying that authority and refusing to participate in or support any such actions."
I mean, that's just off the cuff, you would of course still need to get real specific with all the language and make it absolutely clear what a yes vote or no vote does. But if states ran referendums like that, it would make it exceedingly clear to our governors and sensors where the public's opinions fall, and what their duty should be. And so then if something that truly idiotic were to happen, we'd all be prepared.

That's the biggest problem. You need either Canada's consent (which he can't get) or to win a war with Canada plus the rest of NATO.
The second problem: it would make way more sense to become 10 or 13 US states. With respect to both area and population. That would be a big disadvantage to his party in congress.
You're dreaming if you think NATO minus the US would fight the US if the US invaded Canada. There would be some excuse made, or some technicality found.
As for becoming states, what's much more likely is that the US would make Canada a territory like American Samoa: no electoral college votes, no senators, no congressional representatives, not even US citizenship.

Just yesterday I've seen a humorous post in Russian TG. In short, it was that if just Trump's re-election and his friendly remarks towards Russia without anything of substance made all the Russian officials and "patriots" drop all their "our special way" and "friendship with China" crap and start celebrating, then probably the easiest way for USA to solve any Russian mischief permanently would be to offer Russia to become a state (but that won't work, because US states don't have their own presidents for life).
