I use to have a horrible and persistent case of plantar fasciitis and fairly frequent knee pain. I decided to wear those goofy ass things and in a few months I was healed. Since then I have made it a point to walk barefoot as much as possible and wear neutral lift, low cushioning shoes.
Thankfully I am married so I was able to bypass the inherent chastity feature of the Vibram Five Fingers.
I had similar symptoms as you and also tried the Five Fingers. I had similar healing experience. However I hated the feeling of these shoes with putting them on and taking them off. I realized what I liked was the lightweight footwear, neutral lift with a wider toe box, and a midfoot strike.
I found racing flats gave me everything I liked about Five Fingers, with nothing that I hated about Five Fingers, and they look like regular shoes.
I went to my first date with my now wife wearing these. She thought the prints in the snow were hilarious. Been married for over 10 years now.
It's not just that they look dorky but omg they get nasty. And no, it doesn't come off in the washing machine (the glue doesn't like the washing machine though).
More like opposite of chastity. Flamingo effect.
PSA: if you want to try the concept of the vibram 5 finger shoes (minimal cushion, ability to splat your toes normally), but understand that they look rather silly you can look for zero drop shoes. There are several brands out there that look like traditional shoes while giving a similar benefit.
What if I want the reverse, shoes that have nice cushion to them but look like toe shoes?
I own an old pair, I think they're FILA. I used them as trail runners but it's been awhile. The more strange and difficult part was finding toe socks to go with it.
More the barefoot shoes, like vivo barefoot and whitin. Just know, if you are doing a ton of walking without conditioning and/or streching, you are gonna get hurt. So the alternative is zero drop shoes, like Altra.
But what if I want to look like it's 2012? Cuz that's the last time vibrams were cool
It bothers me a lot that these shoes bother other people so much. Fuck off dad indeed.
They're pick me shoes. They get attention as intended, but some folks apparently don't like the type of attention.
when I wore them I wore them for how they felt, I absolutely did not want the attention.
I agree. I have a friend who wears these wears shoes. We first met through a dating app. We didn’t have a romance vibe, but remained friends. She started wearing these years into our friendship. I’ve never seen less attractive footwear. And that’s with crocs in mind.
I'm pretty sure those can be fetish gear
Wait until my date sees me bust out the five toe socks to go with 'em.
I've had 5 ACL surgeries and torn my hamstring a couple times and my Achilles. I honestly really love wearing my vibrams. Ive got a couple trail running ones and ones I wear for working out, as well as a pair for just walking around. When it's not shit cold and icy out I wear them all the time. It just feels better and hurts my knees and my back way less after all the damage I've done to them.
Honestly never understood why people were so bothered by them. Would I wear them on a first date? Probably not unless I knew the woman was also into them. But if I'm gonna be in a relationship with you? You should probably be okay with being seen with me in them.
My girlfriend now doesn't like them particularly but she doesn't have a problem with me wearing them anywhere, even to see her family.
