Oh they know. As one of them explained it to me 20 years ago, they always knew it was temporary. They accept American help when given but do not make plans to depend on it. They did that once and got slaughtered by Saddam.

We didn’t want to get involved in Syria, but we literally couldn’t avoid it because the US created ISIS, a group that was born in the power vacuum left in the aftermath of the Iraq war.

I would think so.
For one they are likely very well equipped.
For another, it may be less about the troops themselves and more about the implications of what happens if you mess with American troops.
For example, read up on operation Paul Bunyan for an example of what happens when you mess with a seemingly manageable American force.
These "troops" are likely more combat controller than footsoldier.
Last time US forces in Syria got attacked they went 40 to 500 and lost 0 the Russians lost about 250-300

Unpopular opinion but probably the only good policy Trump has is getting the US out of places we don't need to be.
Doesn't outweigh the ahem rest of his stuff, but we'd be throwing the ticker tape if a Dem came out as anti-World Police as he is.
Speaking as a Middle Eastern guy, the one place in the region I don't mind US presence in is Syria until we see a strong government that can stop ISIS and their ilk. I'd say he's getting the US out of places it doesn't need to be if we see him evacuating (for example) Iraq, the Gulf or Jordan (not listing Israel because that one is never going to happen).
