I think politics play a very large role in life and that ignorance of it gives us outcomes like Trump, but I would like to hear more about what the motivation for the cats is if that's also on the table.
Thanks for the shortcut for the community for me to block! ('till after 6 years (2 years after the next USian vote), another USA Dem lost, another extension)
I swear I've only seen meta posts talking about all the cats. I haven't seen a single non-meta cat post.
Update (2024-11-23T01:52Z):
It turns out that, to see the cats, one must sort by "Hot" [1]. I was sorting by "All" + "Active", but, to see the cats, I must sort "All" + "Hot".
[...] Active prioritizes many comments iirc, but on most of these posts I see few if any comments. Using Hot though, they can dominate a feed due to being highly upvoted.
on the one hand, it's annoying having so many photos of somebody's cat(s) flooding your feed
On the other, after months of election dread and with at least four more years of misery for everyone who isn't rich lying ahead of us -- sure, bring on the cat photos. Good palate cleanser.
This sounds made up but I swear to god as I started reading your comment and saw his face the radio station in the waiting room started playing that same song. I’m convinced you summoned rick astley
I did notice an uptick in specifically black cats. And I was kind of surprised to see it just came from !cat!cat@lemmy.world Normally when you get a high volume of one highly specific kind of content, it's because a new community has been opened somewhere and the community creator and/or small group of early users are outright spamming it to populate it because communities that sit empty will inevitably remain empty. Of course what they're doing is bombing the All feed to the point that people who might actually go "Oh hey there's a black cat sub, I'll subscribe to that" will block it because it's the entire fediverse for 50 hours if they don't.
I have seen this phenomenon back on Reddit, where everyone just started posting pictures of their cat to pay the "cat tax" because it was a simple bandwagon to jump onto. It's everyone post their cat day. "Hey, I've got a black cat too. I want to play. My turn!" I just can't be mad at that because it's wholesome social fun but...it's a problem with Lemmy itself that when a community has any kind of spike in traffic it just B-52's everyone's All feed for days.
Void is a stupid thing to call a cat. Like come on guys be original there are other ways of saying "nothing" and centuries worth of racist ways to say black.
