I guess that the commentor meant that those kinds of thoughts don't get you jobs, and doesn't know how easy it is to get a job with a degree in either of those fields. Same for the upvoters.
It feels like some jobs think something like, "sure we want someone that understands the math, and has relevant experience with the tools we're using, but sorry, you're not an expert, just a hobbyist", or, "I see you have relevant experience, but you studied math so I don't understand why you want to work here and we expect you'll leave as soon as you can".
Searching for a job right now has been miserable. I'm basically homeless.
