Bulletins and News Discussion from August 5th to August 11th, 2024 - LGBT - COTW: Iraq
Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.
The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.
The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.
Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section. Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war. Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.
Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:
Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.
https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language. https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one. https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts. https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel. https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator. https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps. https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language. https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language. https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses. https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.
TBH I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to the Venezuelan election so I'm not judging this perspective one way or another, and I don't give a single fuck what U.S. agencies and imperialist NGOs have to say about it. But BadEmpanada published a video which is extremely critical of Maduro's administration and the elections, and doubtful of the results. Seems to be more in line with his Twitter-esque asshole rhetoric than his usual, well-researched video content, but still, it's a perspective from a generally pretty well-researched Argentinian (well, from Austrialia, living in Argentina) leftist who also criticizes the fuck out of U.S. propaganda and coup attempts, and it might be of interest to folks here.
Maduro 'Wins' Venezuelan Election, Only Brainless Internet Children Believe It
you'd have to be extraordinarily unserious to be aware of the long campaign against Venezuela that the US has waged and instantly buy into the narrative that the opposition won. fool me once, shame on you. fool me ten times, and maybe I need to go read a fucking book.
I don't think there are many Maduro superfans here, most of us are aware of his imperfections, but when the only meaningful opposition is a group that just want to strip the copper wiring out of the walls and impoverish millions, then until the communist party (at least, the parts that aren't compromised and working with the neoliberals) can create a revolution to overthrow Maduro, then this is what we have. it is the true lesser evil.
liberals think we critique lesser evilism because we only want true communist perfection and nothing else will suffice. if anything, the exact opposite is true: revolutions are drawn-out, messy processes which can take decades and involve sacrifices and compromises, and those tribulations carry forward into the socialist states they create. look no further than Mao and the leaders who came after. we're the ones who recognize this, and advocate that AES countries really are socialist, while the western leftists carrying water for Biden/Kamala have perfectionist ideas about what true socialism is and refuse to accept "lesser evils".
I haven't watched much of his previous stuff, but he sounds an awful lot like Destiny in that video, in a truly repulsive way.
I'm waiting for more info before I come to a conclusion on whether or not the election was rigged. Even the succdems in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia are doing this. It's inexcusable for any "leftist" to immediately disregard the official results in favor of those presented by compradors.
As far as "Maduro bad", it sounds like his main argument is that he didn't press the communism button. In the same breath he calls pro-Maduro people childish...
Edit: Also, the map of countries denying the results of the elections is starting to look like . Siding with the green countries on that map is incompatible with being a leftist.
There's a little sicko inside me who hopes that Maduro did steal the election just because its poetic to see the fascists lose unfairly.
Whether Maduro did fuck with the numbers or not is irrelevant. Is Maduro perfect? no. But he's 1000x better than any opposition party and he is moving in the right direction. The neoliberal crypto-fascists taking power is a bad outcome regardless of the "will of the electorate." Fuck them and also fuck anyone who would help them even if it is an indirect consequence of the pursuit of "truth" or "integrity."
Fuck truth. Fuck fairness. Fuck fascism. Toe the line.
White leftists believe in HaRm ReDuCtIoN, but only for themselves. Non-whites don't get that. If a country in the Global South votes to do a genocide against an indigenous group, well what can you do, that's how democracy works!
What's weird about this guy is that he tried to position himself as some third-worldist doomsaying any hope in the imperial core as a fucking Anglo expat in Argentina.
Yea, weird how critical he was of Milei and now he is aligning with him on this.
Milei too was elected and there were no complaints about fairness of the election, sometimes people don't elect in their best interests due to bourgeois propaganda. In fact, I would've argued the social-democrats that came before Milei SHOULD have rigged the election to make sure the fascist didn't win.
" All over the world, wherever there are capitalists, freedom of the press means freedom to buy up newspapers, to buy writers, to bribe, buy and fake “public opinion” for the benefit of the bourgeoisie. "
I would've argued the social-democrats that came before Milei SHOULD have rigged the election to make sure the fascist didn't win.
This is funny because Milei's supporters actually accused Sergio Massa of rigging the elections because Milei did really bad in the first round. They said they wanted to count all the votes and other shit. They basically said if Massa won they would go to Chile lol.
Idc about elections. If he stole elections from commies, I might have cared.
Hopefully shit numbers make him do socialization, instead of securitization, seems unlikely though. Gives workers education five more years before shock therapy
I've had a lot of anxiety over the Venezuelan elections, out of a misplaced yearning to feel vindication. Do I think Maduro won the most votes? Yes, I still think so. But in the end, it doesn't matter what I think, or even which narrative is correct. Either way, the most likely outcome is that the US will find an excuse to impose a fiercer sanction regime and the PSUV will remain in power, a pattern that has repeated for every coup and political crisis since Maduro's first election.
If Maduro's electoral claims are validated, then I'll be happy. If the PSUV's narrative ends up being clearly hollow, then I'll be disappointed. Regardless, the takeover of Venezuela by far-right compradors would be a disaster, and a fire-sale of Venenzuela's state assets, even in exchange for lifting sanctions, could only deepen Venezuela's economic issues. The only way for Venezuela to move forward (other than the US withdrawing its illegal and unilateral coercive measures voluntarily), is overcoming the US global sanction regime with the help of the US's adversaries.
BadEmpanada is a deeply unserious YouTube personality. He is no more capable of left media criticism than Robert Fedvans. Both can be okay in very specific issues where they actually cared enough to develop a coherent angle but are usually pretty lazy and are only accidentally correct because of other people they read.
The incumbent also enjoyed overwhelming positive coverage on television and radio, in terms of advertising, broadcast events, and news coverage, while the primary opposition candidate received little media coverage. In addition, authorities frequently attempted to restrict the opposition’s campaign activities. This included harassment or intimidation of people who provided services or goods to the main opposition campaign.
There may be plenty of things wrong with Maduro and I have no problem believing that his government is far from ideal. I would wish for Venezuela to be governed by nice enlightened gay space communists but that is not the alternative to Maduro. The alternative is to let Venezuela become an American puppet which would mean gutting of social programmes, a firesale of collectively owned assets and the abolishment of workers rights. In addition, rule from Washington would mean that popular movements and non-corporate media would be crushed, foreclosing on any chance of socialism well into the future. People might support the so-called opposition for well-meaning reasons but by doing so they're effectively supporting the recolonization of Venezuela.
Man I wonder what the opposition was and what their goals are...
I hate when people are obviously wrong and incredibly smug about it. Laziest coup attempt in a while and this doesn't bat an eye.
