Apparently d is the abbreviation for pence, as a relic of the Carolingian denarius. Charlemagne replaced local currencies with a literal pound of silver, divided into twenty solidi (later shillings), themselves divided into twelve denarii (later pennies). This was the standard across Europe for one thousand years. It only ended in England in 1971.
