What are the best First Person Shooters ever made?

Decades:

70s: What is the best game to come out of the 70s?

80s: What is the best game to come out of the 80s?

90s: What is the best game to come out of the 90s?

00s: What is the best game to come out of the 00s?

10s: What is the best game to come out of the 10s?

We have finally entered a different paradigm. This part of the series will be primarily focusing on genres. So far I have [RTS, Turn based RPG, Action RPG, Board Game, Arcade Game, third person shooter, MMO, Action, Civ Clone (yell at me if this isn't the right name for the genre), 2D Platformer, 3D Platformer, Roguelike, Dungeon Crawler, Card Game, Point and click, Indie, Text dungeon, Stealth, Rhythm, horror, Metroidvania, Survival, Sandbox, Adventure, Simulation, Puzzle, Bullet Hell, Racing, Tower Defense, Sports, Idle, Trivia, and Casual] as available genres. Let me know if I missed something, and I will try to get it added.

I finally decided to give these threads a tag. It might be easier for people to search for in the future. I also expect to bring this over to the other comms in the near future.

This is eventually all going to get compiled into one megathread for people who want gaming recommendations from Chapos specifically. Other consoles and genres will come in sporadic subsequent threads. Please contribute to previous threads if you missed them. This is meant to be an exhaustive list.

Expanding on your choice(s) is definitely a plus. Not everyone knows about or has played non-mainstream titles.

  • In terms of cultural impact alone, it has to be the Halo series. 20 years ago now they revolutionized the fps genre. Their controller layout became the standard across all consoles. Their 2 weapon max carry limit, actual plot, wide open spaces, and community support were huge steps forward for the genre as well. Halo 2 was one of the first games to take advantage of Xbox live, and it really pioneered the console matchmaking scene. Not to mention that halo 2 was the best-selling entertainment OF ALL TIME. IT MADE MORE MONEY THAN TITANIC JAMES CAMERON WAS IN SHAMBLES.

  • STALKER Call of Pripyat. It's one of those games that still has an active modding community 10+ years after its release.

  • For some faster singleplayer shooter games Turok 1 & 2 are some of my all time favorites. Robots, Dinosaurs, zombies, aliens, and some of the coolest guns

  • I've still never played anything as fun or intense as 5v5 Zdaemon CTF. CTF as a game-mode died with the arena shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament. Without the lightning fast movement, instant respawn and twitch shooter mechanics, CTF turns into drudgery. Halo 2 was fantastic in its own right, but it marked the beginning of CTF feeling like a half baked GTA fetch quest thrown in as filler to consume time. Slowly walking back and forth across the map, hoping you don't get sniped. It became a chore just to get the flag, let alone hunt down the scumbag who took yours. The high stakes seek and destroy aura was completely ruined. Now most games don't even have a CTF mode because it simply isn't fun with modern FPS mechanics.

Unfortunately, no one plays Zdaemon CTF anymore.
