On Blahaj and 196

Due to multiple factors, such as unaddressed ableist removals from the /c/196 moderators, defense of chasers, no-quarter rules regarding our users, leakage of good-faith DMs from our admin team, and a general lack of initiative to punish these behaviors, we have come to the conclusion that the 196 community on lemmy.blahaj.zone has made the fediverse an unsafe space for our queer, disabled, neurodivergent, non-western, and other marginalized comrades on this forum, and we will be defederating from lemmy.blahaj.zone until we can be confident that this will not continue to be an issue.

We have attempted to make good-faith parley with both the instance admin and the comm moderators, but we've reached a point which we feel that until these behaviors are addressed by instance administration, we can no longer continue to federate in good-faith while our users are being actively invalidated by a small-but-vocal portion of the forum. Once we are confident that these behaviors have ceased and are unlikely to continue, we are more-than-happy to refederate in the name of queer solidarity.

Thanks for bearing with us :07:

  • Fair.

I hope that the Blahaj admins hold queer people as more important than this behaviour and take action, so that we can federate again, I actually like some of their content. I think they will, if their previous statements are anything to go by, but we will see from this what their real priorities are.

If I were adminning Blahaj I would purge the problematic 196 mod and replace them, as well as adding several significantly better mods to that team. This isn't complicated to resolve without losing the users, the mandate for removing a problematic mod like this is going to be very high. Exert some authority.

  • thank you for listening to us and thank you all so much for your hard work on all this. I know it hasn't been easy but we appreciate you.

it sucks that it's come to this and I wish a better alternative were possible.

  • I do feel for admins and users of hexbear. The dunking on a genuine DM was just petty, and removing comments pointing out the pettiness is just sad.

That said, I hope their heads cool down and we all can be friends. If they think we're bad and authoritarian, wait till they see what the right wing has in store over the next decades.

  • I liked some of the gay memes but seeing them defend slurs and shit is insane. Good fucking riddance. I don't regret my vote to federate (yet) but maybe we should pause and hold votes community by community, have people maybe scout the place out and get the feel first. As far as federation goes, lemmy.ml is plenty, though I also enjoy that programming one and a couple of the other smaller instances. We don't need to rush.

  • It sucks that we have to do this, but we can't throw away the culture of safety that many people here feel in order to appease some reactionaries from another instance. Thanks for dealing with all this

  • Can't say I'm too surprised about this. That instance was one of the first ones I landed on since it was explicitly branding itself as trans friendly. It was ok at first then took a sudden nosedive right around the time 196 blew up and an original mod from the

version got ownership of the blahaj one. I can only hope they sort things out internally but seeing the ongoing reaction thus far doesn't inspire confidence.
