Imagine if after Doom, no one else was allowed to make another FPS, yet alone a space shooter.
Imagine if every FPS after Doom has the exact same art style as Doom.
They did for a while.
Maybe this is selective memory but I remember the old dos days differently.
Outside of your capstone games, gloom, and Super Noah's Ark, I seem to remember, most successful clones had their own style.
Hexen, red neck rampage, duke nukem 3d, dark forces, rise of the triad, had unique art styles even when limited by current level design.

Exactly. Doom-clones are what made modern FPS possible.
