Over fishing, pollution and changing climate have rendered strömming, the fish used to make surströmming, increasingly rare. This year it's been selling for hundreds of euros per can in some places. Gunpowder would be the cheaper option
Indeed, Strömming / Hering has become rare. However, for warfare, Surströmming could also be replaced by some fermented organic waste to achieve he same effect.
Why wont we go back to throwing dead cows over the sieged city walls. Overengineering for problems solved thousand years ago.
Strömming is the champagne of herring its only called strömming if its from the botnian bay otherwise its sill
