Boycotts, protests, press articles and just public opinion in general used to be powerful tools to influence companies and politicians.
But they have lost their effectiveness, because companies and politicians have figured out ways to make themselves immune to boycotts and protests.
They have engineered society to make us all dependent and confused.
It used to be, every product in the supermarket had a smallish company behind it, and that company was very sensitive to public opinion. There was always competition ready to steal market share.
Now all the brands are just labels for a few giant corporations. You simply can't boycott them. If one brand becomes the target of a boycott, a different brand from the same or another multinational will get the money, perhaps through a store brand.
Yes, they are making it harder, but that's not a good reason not to not try at all - which is what they appear to be suggesting. For some areas sure it's harder to tell who the owner is and such, but that does not apply everywhere. It's not super difficult to figure out if you are boycotting Target or not
I think the bigger issues right now is just that lot of people forget how it often takes a while boycotts to work. For instance, people boycotted the Montgomery busses for 381 days before they were desegregated

Musk going in front of his employees begging them to not sell their stock doesn't sound like a company immune to a boycott.

I dont agree. Its something people can do so it keeps them onboard, it still has some effect, and the fact that Israel rages against BDS (for example) shows that boycotts are effective.
It does progress the conversation, limited targeting of companies based on their political contributions is playing wack a mole. It's like Republicans boycotting Bud light because of advertising with Dylan Mulvaney by buying another beer also made by Ambev.
