I'm sorry but the start a new instance argument people throw around to dismiss moderation issues is a stupid one. Why? Because on federated systems like Lemmy, the instance that has the bigger slice of the pie (most users, most active communities) has the most control and power. Meaning the biggest platforms have the ability to kill your Fediverse experience almost completely, and starting a new server or joining another one won't help you if you're banned (I'm assuming you're not going for intentional ban evasion) and if you're being censored, it also won't help you because they'll still censor you from the majority of the fediverse. If they're big and powerful enough they may even get others to join them in defederating your instance, making the impact that much bigger.
So while it is technecally true to say that Fediverse platforms are decentralized, I think it is dishonest and disingenuous to try and frame moderation issues like the ones with Lemmy.world or lemmy.ml as ones that can be solved by starting your own server, or migrating to another server. They can't, because those servers control a larger portion of the pie, as in the communities and the userbase available.
If people don't like how their country is run, why don't they leave instead of trying to improve it?
I mean .world is fine most of the time, the meme was about a recent change where mods are apparently not supposed to remove obvious misinformation and instead "fight it with words"

Fuck off with this critical support bullshit. There is a constant stream of posts (legitimately) criticizing the US on Lemmy generally, and even on .lw. But in contrast, almost every post critical of any anti-American State gets removed for "bigotry" on .ml. According to their moderation practices, no criticism of these states can be valid, because they are fighting US imperialism. It doesn't matter to .ml than many of these states are aspiring imperialists themselves (e.g. Russia) or genocidal religious theocracies (.e.g. Iran) or oppressive authoritarian regimes (China). That's the issue here, not that @cm0002@lemmy.world hasn't personally called out the US in this thread. Trying to "both sides" this is completely disingenuous.

They never really covered how they could ensure that the responses they collected were truthful. I can believe most similar surveys targeting the US, because we've had the first amendment since... forever. The ability to criticize our government in nearly any shape or form has been hard coded into us. It took billions and careful planning to get internal propaganda to work. And on top of that, us here in the US hasn't really truly dealt with widespread instability, so it doesn't take much for people to have a negative view of the government.

So yea, even if the average Chinese citizen sees through the propaganda and realizes that their government might be doing human rights abuses and they are missing on freedoms others enjoy they'd probably still say they're satisfied with the CCP because of what many have experienced in the past.
If you'd lived a good portion of your life dealing with unstable governments and constant famine and then suddenly the CCP came in and stabilized everything at the cost of a significant chunk of freedoms, would you criticize them?
Doesn't mean it's right, I'm also not saying it's right for the US to intervene at all. China and its people have a road ahead and they should absolutely head down it unencumbered. But, they're still behind the times, the CCP is not something to revere, worship or promote.
Capitalism absolutely needs to die, but the CCP format/flavor is not the way forward either. The rights and freedoms sacrifice makes sense for the Chinese people with the expanded context of their history from before the CCP, but the same sacrifice makes no sense for another country like the US.
We should be able to move towards a socialist style country without needing to sacrifice privacy and freedoms
