For example sociologists who need labels to survive because they can't live with the ambiguity that is society (don't ask why I feel this way). You could argue that these "generations" could be applied to people from and to a certain age when correlated with historic events like wars or whatever. It's kinda developed into some random classification that's updated every few years so you can complain about a new group of people in your research.
