What exactly are potato waffles and what is the preferred method if consumption?
Nope they weren't fried and were more like that:

I followed this recipe (in French).
I ate them as a side dish.
I haven't seen anything like that before, but admittedly my French cooking knowledge comes from high school French class and Julia Child.

Ever since the first time I saw a box labeled "potato waffles," I thought they were basically hash browns, but I just looked it up and apparently this is the source of some controversy.
So to answer your question ... They are either hash browns or not hash browns. Probably they are consumed in a manner similar to hash browns.
