I think Edward Snowden showed us all how the US feels about heroes.
Mangione probably should have considered leaving the country... I guess, I'm sure he considered it.
Or he decided to just ride the entire "justice" system to truly reveal that it is rules for thee, not for me along every shitty step of the way.
And once everyone sees his sacrifice, then the system will surely change! /s
