It's a shame for humanity that so-called 'traditions' survive that long imo. We humans appear to have such things across cultures. In China, for example, sometimes they practice what is called "wedding hazing" as I have read recently:

The report said that those involved in the antics were “deeply sorry for the negative impact [the video] created.” [...] many Chinese did not find the incident funny, or accept the suggestion that it had all been good-spirited fun.
