Finally got to the Chibnall era. Three episodes in and I'm already not wanting to keep going. I like the premise of Rosa a bit but the script and the actual plot elements are... kinda shit really. And not the most historically accurate. There goes my comfort show, I suppose :p
No, Chibnall era really falls into clickbaity type of writing. More than half the shit don't make sense, the companions have the personality of Digestives (though if I'd have to pick one from them that is ok it's Graham funny enough), Jodie unfortunately tries to channel Matt Smith a tad too much. She's such a good actress but she needed to inject her own flair, and the scripts weren't much to work with.
Yeah, I was getting Matt Smith vibes too. In all fairness he was a tough gig to follow, so maybe that was an influence? And I feel like there was probably a lot of scrutiny over picking a female lead for the first time which probably added a lot of pressure too.
But, the writing, from the few episodes I saw, just doesn't seem great at all. It makes me wonder how she would have gone under RTD or even Moffat. Kinda wish she had stayed on at least one more season.
So a bit of River Song..." Spoilers!"... ::: spoiler spoiler
There is another female Doctor, but she has her own style
:::.
I agree that there is incredible pressure with the role, but I think if she had better material it would be better. It was around the time when the Beebs really was trying for everything to be an in your face social commentary. Chibnall's material tried too hard with it. Where as Moffat (however problematic he can be) and RTD, yeah it's social commentary but it's worked in well into a contained science fiction story each episode.
They definitely went back to their roots with the Ncuti era.
