NATO really fucked this one up, didn't they? Do nothing, Russia wins. Put boots on the ground and you risk nuclear war. The best they can do is sanctions, and everybody knows that's pointless.
Geopolitics isn't a game of chess, it's a game of poker and Putin just called NATO's bluff.
- The west encouraged Ukraine for years to play tough with the Russians over Donbass, dazzling them with promises of NATO and EU membership that they had no intention of ever keeping. We fed them weapons and supported them diplomatically in the press, so they thought they could take on Russia. Then we left them to get wrecked once Russia decided would not tolerate the hostility so close to their heartland.
  Ukraine should have been kept neutral like Finland, in 2013 Russia purposed a joint economic package with the EU to Ukraine, so as to build up the Ukrainian economy and help them stay independent and neutral. The EU shot down the joint plan and sent their own aid without the Russians... just provocation after provocation by the West

  Funny watching people on Twitter talk about this. Obvious shit like "NATO will lie to you and hang you out to dry" and oblivious shit like "Let's just add Ukraine to NATO, and then 'we' can go in and do something about this"
- It really is unbelievable just how much NATO absolutely FUCKED the people of Ukraine here. Fucking evil, despicable institution. They never even had the intention of actually allowing Ukraine in.
- Yeah, on top of the impacts on the people of Ukraine, this has gotta be the worst possible result for US/NATO. Well, if Putin annexes Ukraine then I guess that would be the worst result for them but he doesn't seem to want to even if he theoretically has the ability to. Best result was that there's an invasion but Ukraine pushes back Russia and wins, as you've now got a major piece of the blockade fitted in place and Russia's ambitions in Europe are nearly obliterated, and this humiliates Putin and his military. Plus Biden looks amazing for standing up to the Russian bear and winning. Second best result was that Putin is forced to peacefully concede Ukraine to NATO, which Biden and NATO can riff off and works pretty good for them overall. This just sucks for them. Awful.
- The entire existence of NATO after the Cold War is, flatly, absurd. An absurd institution is going to do absurd things for absurd reasons.
